Under the dictatorial rule of Idi Amin Dada, from 1971-1979, an estimated 300,000 lost their lives. Another 100,000 were killed through guerilla warfare and human rights abuses under President Milton Obote's leadership (1980-1985). Since Yoweri Museveni became Uganda's president in 1986, he has introduced democratic reforms and has been credited for substantially improving the country's human rights accord. Museveni has also instituted economic changes that have produced solid growth.
