Significant progress is made one step at a time

Our Own Home staff residence

Dear Friends,

Significant progress is made one step at a time.

Earlier this year, Horizon agreed to take on the full administrative responsibilities of Our Own Home, a residence for HIV+ orphaned children situated in Buikwe District, Uganda.

Launched by Holly Pheni in 2008, approximately 60 kids have become a family to each other through the ministries of Our Own Home.

In 2012, Ugandan government officials directed that some of these kids return to live with their extended families, leaving 30+ kids living on the grounds of OOH.

Through all of this transition, Horizon continues to sponsor all of the kids who still qualify for sponsorship, both those who live at Our Own Home and those who reside with their grandparents or aunts and uncles.

Important steps have been taken to secure the future of the OOH kids. Some of these steps include:

  • The hiring of Joshua and Miriam Tumwisige to oversee the new Eastern Region of Horizon Uganda which includes the management of OOH. (Joshua worked for 7 years as Horizon Uganda’s Office Manager and one of its Field Workers in the Western Region. He graduated in 2016 with a university degree in social work and child psychology.)
  • The legal transfer of $600,000 worth of facilities and grounds on approximately four acres of land to Horizon Uganda.
  • Identifying approximately 200 orphaned kids in Buikwe District for potential child sponsorship.
  • The launching of six weekly Children’s Clubs to provide spiritual nurture for both sponsored and unsponsored kids.
  • Recruiting child sponsors for 33 of the 200 Buikwe kids since August 1. More were sponsored at Highland Park Community Church on Sunday, October 15 when Horizon’s Kuyasa Kids Choir sang in the congregation’s worship services
  • Paying a deposit on a significant piece of land adjacent to OOH for the purpose of building a church for the community and OOH kids, plus a place to house the Children’s Club.
  • The recent distribution of thousands of dollars worth of good used clothing to the sponsored and unsponsored Buikwe orphans.

Now, its time to take another significant step.

We need to replace the kitchen appliances, furniture, and accessories in OOH’s Staff Residence.

Later this year, the former Project Manager for OOH will be returning to Uganda from the United States to collect his belongings, which includes all the furnishings in the house. He has graciously allowed the Tumwisiges to use them until his return.

In addition to purchasing a stove, refrigerator, washing machines, and the like, we need to buy sofas, tables and chairs, beds and mattresses, and items like dishes, pots and pans, linens, and so on.

Altogether, we need to raise $20,000 to purchase the furnishings needed for the Staff Residence.

In addition to serving as a home for Joshua and Miriam, the Staff Residence will also house small Horizon GO Teams when they are ministering in Buikwe District.

While $20,000 seems like a lot of money to raise, you would be pleased to know that a $5,000 matching grant has been promised to purchase items for the OOH Staff Residence.

In other words, every dollar that you donate will be matched dollar for dollar up to $5,000.

We are definitely making major progress in securing the future of our precious OOH kids and many others like them. Purchases for the Staff Residence is the NEXT STEP toward this all-important objective.

Your gift of $10, $25, $50, $100 or whatever you feel led to give will move us forward!

Grateful for God, OOH, and you,

Bob Pearson
Founder and President

P.S. Ugandan government officials are committed to filling up OOH again with orphaned children who have nowhere else to live!
